This tall, prickly succulent from the dry, spiny forests of Madagascar and dry forests of Africa survives its barren native climate by storing water in its oversized trunk. The spines emerge with the leaves, grow, then harden. There are 25 species of Pachypodium, which flower in showy white, pink or yellow in spring and summer.
